Describe yourself like an Instagram/Twitter bio:
A long green bean that protrudes slightly in all places and can be lured with french fries or hummus.
What do you do?
Academically, I study Media and Communications. ~Artistically~, I photograph things and write poetry. Unofficially-artistically, I put clothes together and call it fashion.
How and why did you start?
I started taking photos when I got a DSLR. Yes, I was one of those kids who got one because of the hype. Good times. Regardless, my camera has followed me everywhere ever since. I used to only take landscape and travel photos because I was convinced that I had absolutely no talent in taking portraits, but I decided to give it a shot (pun intended). I started taking more portraits when I moved in with my two friends last year. Clara is my literal in-house model and our lack of hobbies is what sparked the “Bored Girls” series. Long story short, I still love landscape photography, but I’m trying to venture more into the portrait-sphere too.
Photography and poetry are two very different outlets for me. I take photos for the aesthetic value and I write poetry for the emotional value. I sometimes merge the two together and those are usually my favourite works. I started writing poetry a long time ago; writing has always been my emotional outlet where my feelings flow free, and poetry was that, but more eloquent.
What are you currently working on/what should we be looking forward to?
I’m on exchange in the Netherlands at the moment, so I’m not working on anything. However, you should be looking forward to more “Bored Girls” (Possible expansions?! Who knows!!), poetry in physical form, collabs?! Stay tuned…
What’s your advice for people who want to get started?
Just go for it. People always look at art and say “I could have done this”, but the difference is that they did and you didn’t. Nothing is perfect except McDonald’s french fries; strive to get there, but don’t beat yourself up about it if you don’t. Art is a learning, growing process, and always remember that you can’t please everyone. What you may like, someone else may not, and that’s okay.
Lastly, shamelessly plug yourself!
I’m on Instagram as @mildredlike which is where you will find my day-to-day happenings, and my website http://www.mildredlike.com/ for my more official photography and poetry stuff. Follow me to gain absolutely nothing!!
Note from Soph: Mildred is actually one of the reasons I started blogging in the first place! If it wasn't for her blazing the trail, I don't think I would have started let alone stuck to it. Forever grateful for ya, Mil.
